French Riviera Toulon
French Riviera Toulon Information
The Good: Toulon is a very interesting, international town. It has a pretty and active port area; the naval base; a fascinating "old town" with squares, terrace cafés, trompe l'oeil wall murals; excellent shopping, a modern main-line railway station, and lots of lovely old buildings with wrought-iron balconies.
The Bad: Their is a combination of Provencal village feeling with some typical seaport-town areas
Toulon is a major town located on the Mediterranean coast to the east of Marseille.
The town is in a sheltered position on an inlet, giving rise to its large harbour and its role as home to the French naval fleet. The city suffered significant damage during the Second World War.
Toulon hasn't until now played a large role on the French Riviera tourist circuit, although the town has been much improved and renovated in recent years.
You can learn more of the naval role and history of Toulon at the Museum of the Sea (Musee de la Marine) in the town. There are other interesting museums to visit in Toulon, including the Museum of Old Toulon and the archaeology and natural history museum.
The old town, now much restored, is the most interesting sector, with narrow streets lined with shops leading to small open squares and numerous cafes. The best time to visit is in the morning when the daily market on Cours Lafayette adds some colour to the town.
The 19th century Opera House is another landmark.
If you are in Toulon and looking for beaches, head to Mourillon on the edge of town for nice clean beaches backed by carefully planted trees and gardens. the beaches were artificially created in the
1970's but i'm sure that won't stop you enjoying yourself!Sailing
The seafront along the port is a walking area lined with terrace cafés, souvenir shops, fising boats, tour boats for excursions of the Rade de Toulon and the islands, yacht harbor and a backdrop of warships of the naval base.
